Creating a new riverside destination for Mossley

The Woodend Green Gateway project will transform an underused area surrounding Lock 14W of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, alongside the River Tame and the Grade II listed Weaving Shed at Woodend Mill, Mossley. Delivered by Thread & Butter Collective, the project will create an attractive, accessible public space that celebrates the area's industrial heritage and natural landscape while encouraging people to spend more time outdoors

The project forms the first stage in the wider regeneration of the historic Weaving Shed, creating a welcoming destination that improves access, supports biodiversity and reconnects people with this remarkable riverside setting.

Green Gateway Corridor

The existing route from Manchester Road to Lock 14W will be transformed into an attractive green corridor through site clearance, improved drainage, repairs to historic stone walls, removal of temporary fencing, habitat planting and improvements to the existing pathway. Directional signage will help visitors discover the canal, the Community Garden and the wider Woodend Mill site, creating a safer and more welcoming route for pedestrians and cyclists.

Community Garden

Beside Lock 14W of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and the Grade II listed Weaving Shed, the new Community Garden will create a peaceful riverside space where people can meet, relax and enjoy nature. The garden will include accessible pathways, seating, planting beds, wildflower areas and a wide variety of native planting designed to support wildlife throughout the year. Existing stone walls will be repaired and conserved, while a sensitively designed riverside safety barrier will improve visitor safety without detracting from the natural setting.

Bird and bat boxes, bird feeding stations, insect homes and other wildlife features will enhance biodiversity, creating valuable habitat alongside the River Tame. Information panels will introduce visitors to the local wildlife, the history of the Weaving Shed, the River Tame, the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, and nearby walking and cycling routes, encouraging people to explore the area and learn more about its history and environment.

A Lasting Legacy

The Woodend Green Gateway will transform a neglected riverside area into a welcoming public space that people can enjoy throughout the year. It will improve biodiversity, conserve historic features, encourage walking and cycling, strengthen connections between Manchester Road, Lock 14W, the River Tame and the future Weaving Shed community hub, and provide a lasting environmental and social benefit for Mossley.

By investing in this project, the Pride in Place Impact Fund will help create an accessible green space that enhances the local environment, supports community wellbeing and provides a fitting setting for the future restoration of one of Tameside's most significant industrial heritage buildings.
